Remote desktop & SSH
Remote desktop without port forwarding.
Forwarding port 3389 puts your computer’s login screen on the public internet, where it gets attacked within minutes. Project Zero gives RDP, SSH and VNC a private address that only the people you allow can reach.
Free for you and two services. Built on OpenZiti by Actieve.
The problem with exposed RDP
Remote Desktop Protocol is one of the most attacked services on the internet. An open RDP port is scanned constantly and targeted with password guessing and known vulnerabilities, and it is a common way into small business networks.
How it works
- Install the Project Zero desktop app on the computer you want to reach and share its remote desktop.
- Choose who can connect: yourself, a teammate, a group, or a share link.
- From another enrolled device, open your usual remote desktop client and connect to the private address, for example office-pc.yourname.ziti.
- Windows still asks for the computer's own login, so you keep two layers: network access and the account itself.
Not just RDP
The same approach works for SSH on Linux servers and Raspberry Pis, VNC on Macs and Linux desktops, and the admin pages of devices that should never face the internet.
Questions
Good to know.
Does the computer need to stay on?
Yes. The hosting computer must be on and running the Project Zero app, like any remote desktop target.
Is it free for my own computers?
Yes. Sharing up to two services with yourself is free, which covers remote desktop to a home and an office computer.
Can IT support reach a user's PC?
Yes. Share the PC's remote desktop with a support group in your company, and anyone added to that group can reach it.
